ARTIST'S STATEMENT
"Strange Arrangements of Light is a gallery based cinematic reel of the artistic and emotive relationship between music and film. An exclusive presentation of King Creosote’s unreleased material, the installation is a response to the devaluation of music and film work from art form to internet download commodity.
Music is increasingly marginalised and downgraded through people's use of the internet. Although most recording artists would probably choose a broader distribution of their material over sales, there remains a de-valuation of the art; as soon as something is free, it somehow becomes more disposable and subsequently people seem to care less. King Creosote had already been considering this; with his 'Bits Of Strange' live performances, where he played songs that would otherwise remain unrecorded by him and invited the audience to record the performance for themselves. Everybody's recording is their own, which they were there to experience the creation of. In one stroke it returned music to its original form, played by the artist to a group of people, but also underlined the cynicism of mass-produced music and our abuse of it.
I suppose in, another way altogether, it could be seen as biting the hand that feeds. I would probably not ever have heard King Creosote’s music when I did if it was not for the distribution of his music on CD. And everyone wants to own what they love. But I can recognise what technology is doing. It lets us take the most convenient route which, much like fast food, isn't always the best option long-term. We have incredible access to everything that everyone does now, and I'm not knocking that, it's an amazing thing. But listening to music, and indeed watching music film, through Youtube and Myspace and so on, it’s just not the moment I want to experience a piece of art within. I want a sense of event, and the chance to get lost in something. Maybe this is a nostalgia-tainted attitude, based on the excitement you get when you are young and finding something new.
I still dwell on what I feel I am missing. As David Lynch put it; 'If you are playing the movie on a telephone, you will never in a trillion years experience the film. You'll think you have experienced it, but you'll be cheated. It's such a sadness, that you think you've seen a film on your fucking telephone."
