Columbian Press
  • Tutor: Mike Waight
  • Date: 2 February 2013
  • Time: 10 - 4.30pm
  • Cost: £75/65 conc.

We all remember the humble tattie print - well now it’s time to take these experiences up a gear! Begin the day with Mike looking at examples of relief prints - from simple one colour runs to multiple plates, registered together to create complex images. Then it’s your turn to cut away the surface of a lino block and print your own imagery, using our beautiful Columbian Press. All tools and materials are provided.

What is Relief Printing?

Relief printing is the process of 'inking up' a surface which has an image cut into it in some form. It is the oldest form of printmaking, and is one of few techniques that does not require the use of a press.

Lino, wood or card can be cut into leaving only selected, raised surface areas to take ink. A layer of ink is spread over the surface using a roller; those raised sections, or 'relief' sections will create an image on the paper which you apply to the ink.

Points to remember are:

you cut into the space you want to appear blank on your print

the image will be a mirror of what you have cut into
